The Leap Federation
At Mandeville, we take pride in the positive relationships and interactions between children and adults around our schools. We believe that a positive approach to behaviour management is essential to support children to develop their own self-worth and their ability to reflect on and manage their feelings and behaviours. Positive relationships with other children and adults increase the ability of children to be fully engaged in the life of the school and ensure a calm and productive atmosphere in which to learn and play.
Part of this approach is that staff practice a trauma-informed approach. We have created school cultures where staff are aware of trauma and its effect and where everyone is committed to supporting pupils who have experienced trauma. We place relationships and a child’s sense of safety and security at the heart of the classroom experience and classroom management. We encourage nurture, warmth and empathy, even when a child is presenting behaviours that feel challenging. We promote a sense of community and belonging and always take individual circumstances into account.
LEAP schools recognise that a child who demonstrates negative behaviour needs the support of a fair and consistent behaviour management system which is understood and agreed by the whole school community – children, staff, parents and carers. The school rules are designed to keep everybody in school safe and the consequences for breaking the rules are designed to allow a child to reflect on their behaviour and restore relationships.
- Give people a reason to be proud of you.
- Always listen and follow instructions.
- Focus on your learning and allow others to learn.
- Be kind in your actions and your words.
- Look after our school environment.
The LEAP approach centres on the 'Stay on Green' card system, a method rooted in positive behaviour management. We believe recognising achievements is key to the system’s success, rewarding positive behaviours with praise, verbal feedback, stickers, tokens, and certificates. The system uses a series of coloured cards to clearly guide children in recognising when their behaviour choices have had a negative impact, providing necessary time for them to reflect and understand what changes they need to make.
All school staff are trained in consistent use of language to describe behaviours and to understand how to help children regulate their emotions.
The Stay on Green system works alongside The Zones of Regulation, which is a conceptual framework used to teach pupils self-regulation. This involves responding to feelings and what is going on, in a socially appropriate way. Children need to develop underlying skills in order to be able to self-regulate. We use our positive behaviour system alongside teaching children how to make better choices, so they learn what they could do differently and have opportunities to practise these skills in a safe and supportive environment.
At LEAP, we understand that emotions and feelings drive behaviour and that behaviour is a way of children communicating these feelings. The underlying reasons why a child is demonstrating negative behaviours are always considered and, in partnership with parents, we aim to gain an understanding of each child’s individual behaviour needs.

At Mandeville, rewards for good behaviour and attitude to learning are many and varied. They begin with praise and are reinforced with green tokens, Headteacher’s Awards, stickers, certificates, phone calls from the teacher and whole school recognition in the form of a 'Star of the Week' certificate and their name in the newsletter. There are whole class rewards when classes fill a Green Tokens Box or achieve a specific target and these are acknowledged in our weekly Achievement Assemble and rewarded with a trophy/special bear mascot and additional time in key areas of the playground.
At Mandeville, our positive behaviour approach culminates in 'Golden Time', a highly valued weekly privilege earned through demonstrating a positive attitude to learning and strong self-management. This special reward session, typically held on Friday afternoons, offers children a choice of diverse, enriching activities – from collaborative games to creative projects like art or cooking – cementing the intrinsic reward of taking responsibility for their success.
Green tokens are awarded for outstanding behaviour. Children who are walking around the school sensibly and those who display amazing manners are awarded green points. All members of staff can give out green points when they see children exhibiting these fabulous behaviours.
Each week the green tokens are counted up, and we see which classes have the most green points. In our weekly assemblies, we announce the winners and award the winning class with a trophy or a cuddly bear to keep for the week.
